Summer Projects

Postby Serendipity on Sun Feb 21, 2010 9:03 am

This will mark the second summer we have been at our place and things seem to change more and more each year! This year our #1 plan is to get a water bowl installed (because I am sick of hauling water!). We recieved a nice letter in the mail last week saying we are getting 100 trees from the PFRA so that means we will be planting trees around the area our outdoor riding arena will be. Our last horse related project will be to pound the posts for the arena and our corral system. Besides that, other projects include a continuation of pruning of our orchard...I got a LOT done last year and can actually walk among the trees now, but there is still a long way to go. We will be tilling a garden area and I plan on painting our shop and "kennel" (its an old pig barn we have converted into a nice big kennel). Lastly there are 3 trees around our house that will likely be coming down this year. Our plans are to build a new house someday on the site of our current house and the trees will have to go for the new house anyways.

So that is my plan for the summer...anyone wanna come help? ;)

Anyone else got any projects planned for the summer?

This is our 10th year on our place and as every body knows there is still lots to be done! We're doing work on the house this year and fixing and replacing fence. Barn repairs and a facelift too (for the barn although I could use 1 too) as well as getting organized for more trees, etc, etc. Gardening continues too. I love spring. :D

For us it will be the 3th summer with the farm.
The first thing we have to do in Spring is getting rid of all the weeds in my vegetable garden and a big part of the pasture. The thistles (?) were growing wild last summer.

Also we want to include the rest of the woods with the pasture for the horses to roam around in. Not a big deal, we just go around the trees with electric wire.

In another yard that we used in the fall we want to build a little shed to use for tack and a place to sit.

We need to clean the dugouts in both yards with copper sulfate and make a system on our water containers , where the water bowl will be filled up as soon the level goes down.

Remove manure from our pasture.

For sure I hope to work a lot with my horses this year and ride more often than last year. :-)
When I read what I just wrote down I'm shocked it still so much! LOL
I suppose the work will never be done right?

This will be our third summer here. And although people tell us that they can see the work that we put into the place - I seem to only see what still needs to be done!!!! For the last two years, I have forfeited any enjoyment of the horses for the sake of rebuilding, repairing, removing and and and. But this year I am limiting my projects to painting (only whatever I can comfortably get done) and finishing the west pasture area (that might take a weekend) and putting in a garden (I don't have a green thumb so that should be a rather self limiting experience) and buying a garden shed to use as an entrance to the root cellar (I'll buy it and someone else can figure out how to set it over the entrance). Anything else will have to wait.

I have some young horses ( 3 of them) to get at least 20 more rides each on. We hope to convert a large cow corral into a horse corral with planks instead of barb wire. Also, I have to get our house painted this year and hope to hire someone to paint with me. I had about 20 projects planned for summer but whittled them down as the economy seems to be slowing down and maybe not as many funds to work with as we had first projected. Also, I have to focus, as there is only so much energy and time to do these things. I am trying to learn to prioritize.
